The Red Hyacinth is a collaborative showcase of student talent at Mercy University.
Sponsored by the Valerie Lewis Fund, alum, graduate, and undergraduate students from the English program and the Design + Animation program direct, edit, and design a yearly journal that includes artwork, poetry, and prose.
I art directed and designed the first volume edition.
The red hyacinth flower is not only Valerie Lewis’s favorite flower, to whom this journal and fund are dedicated, but it also represents a new type of quill; a tool for expression.
Its upright version used to symbolize a call to action, and its horizontal version used to symbolize pause, becoming a tombstone glyph at the end of every written piece.
The form of the monogram emulates the proportions of the journal. Both are set in Gitan, a typeface with soft contrast that mirrors the visual relationship between the stem and petals of the red hyacinth flower; the journal’s muse and namesake.
